Art Department dj set @ W Hotel Barcelona - Off Sonar, June 2011 by No.19 Music

Art Department is the brainchild of Canadian techno/house Legend Kenny Glasgow and Canada’s fastest rising star and No.19 label owner - Jonny White. As individuals both Kenny and Jonny have released countless critically acclaimed records and are regarded internationally as two of the most forward thinking, relevant underground producers out of North America. Kenny’s credentials date back to the late 80’s and include productions on Narcotic, Jinxx, his own Method 11/11 label and Turbo. Whilst White’s revered No.19 Music label along side a blindingly fast - growing discography have seen him rapidly rise to the forefront of the international scene.

The pair, despite being close friends and stalwarts in the Toronto electronic music scene for years, had not joined forces in the studio until only as recently as 2009, when Damian Lazarus called on them to remix Riz MC for his prestigious Crosstown Rebels Label. The result was an entirely new sound that drew cues from the best of both artists. It was a futuristic and raw, synth-driven, underground masterpiece, the start of a new idea and the birth of Art Department…

Before long the two were working full time in the studio to expand upon what they had created but now with a new focus… the concept for Art Department was to create a live dj/vocal performance based on the new sound they were beginning to produce and would feature Kenny Glasgow’s unique and sublime vocals that had been heard only 10+ years earlier on records like “Pressing On”. It wasn’t long before Damian heard what the pair had been working on and immediately offered them a deal with Crosstown Rebels that would include several singles, remixes and a full length album due out at the beginning of 2011.

The momentum continued and Art Department performed their first ever live show at the Crosstown Rebels Get Lost event at the 2010 WMC in front of a jam packed room, along side an A list cast of 17 artists from the label. DJ’s, promoters and party animals regarded the performance as one of the most ground-breaking & important shows at this years WMC…Simple label boss - Will Saul was quoted saying “the live show was the best thing we’ve heard since we heard Mathew Johnson for the first time…”. The follow up performance came the very next night at Jamie Jones & Lee Foss’ Hot Natured party where Art Department treated the enthusiastic crowd to a mind-bending dj set and secured their spot as residents for the much lauded Hot Natured brand.

With massive support from the rebel crew along with an exciting release schedule including collaborations with Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones and Soul Clap there is no doubt that this will be yet another inspired chapter in the story of these Canadian talents.

The Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1 is one of, if not 'the' most prolific radio shows in all of electronic dance music. About a week ago Maya Jane Coles made her debut on this prestigious show with her first Essential Mix. We say 'first' because she will surely be back again in the future. This mix has already been a huge hit, compiling over 20,000 plays off of her soundcloud page alone! That's huge. This would have been posted earlier, but a nice vacation has held that up. Fresh New Mix from South West Seven + New Chart from Scope

South West Seven is a duo from Northern Ireland comprised of Ric McClelland aka SCOPE and Sean Grieve aka S-Groove. The two have produced many hot house tracks on labels such as NRK, Solar Disco, Urban Torque, and Large Music and they have a style that demonstrates their superb tastes and deep roots in house music. Under the alias Scope, Ric McClelland has over 120 track credits and climbing. Even though the two are both considered seasoned veterans in house music and they have worked together before, their South West Seven project is very young and only about a year old. We have loved the music Ric and Sean have created together and look forward to hearing much more tunes from them.

An Interview with Giom about his Compilation on Lost My Dog "Clips & Space"

Thanks to the good folks at Lost My Dog, we have had the pleasure to interview Giom who is an upcoming superstar in the house music scene. Giom is originally from Niort, France but has resided in London for more than a decade. Over the years he has collaborated with some of the key players in house music such as the Lawnchair Generals, Fred Everything, JT Donaldson, and more.

Giom got together with Lost My Dog by chance at the Sonar Festival in 2009. He and the Lost My Dog crew hit it off immediately and he was soon working on remixes for the label and eventually dropped his own 'Things You Do EP' which hit the Top 10 charts on Beatport, Stompy, and Traxsource. He was given the master key to the entire Lost My Dog catalog and put together a special compilation called "Clips & Space" including a few remixes that he made specifically for this album. The Clips & Space Compilation is available as of today on Beatport. You can also order the album from the Lost My Dog website (click here). There are 3 different pacakges available, all of which include the mixed compilation as well as the individual tracks plus Lost My Dog stickers, but you can even get the remix parts to 2 of Giom's remixes on the album with one of the other packages.

This album is very well put together and it is obvious that Giom spent a lot of time picking out the right tracks as well as programming the mix. What inspired you to put together a compilation from your favorite Lost My Dog tracks?

It was something new for me to do, different from producing and doing remixes so that's what attracted me to the project. It was also a slightly different approach to be taken from other DJ mixes which i do every so often and give away on my websites. But ultimately it was all fun. Listening to all these great tracks, picking up my favourites, reworking themÉ I had fun!

Lost My Dog has a very impressive discography, how did you go about picking these specific tracks?

Nags from LMD gave me the entire mastered catalog to choose from so I started having a listen to every single tracks. I picked up the ones I liked the most and divided them onto 3 categories: the ones I liked, the ones I really liked, and the ones I really really liked. After that you get a basic idea of the feel of the mix. However as I started putting it together I realised that some tracks sounded a bit too similar so I went back to my lists and found some other that worked better instead.

Do you have a track in the compilation that's a personal favorite?

I'd say Yse's "Things Never Said" is the standout track in the mix and my personal favourite. Musical, great arrangement, quirky, awesome!

When you DJ and also when you make mixes like this, what is your approach for programming the tracks? Do you always try to mix in key?

I don't always do it when I play live as I go with the flow, but for this album I did, it's all NEARLY in key :) I personally find harmonic mixing more musical sounding so I thought, as this is a commercially released album AND my first album out, I really should make it as musical as possible.

We love all 4 of your new remixes in this compilation, what was it about these 4 songs specifically that made you decide to remix them?

Thank you! Again, because it was a fun thing to do. I wanted the mix to be a bit special so I thought I might as well rework some of these great tracks. Also, because I was using "mix in key", at one point I realised that I needed a track in a particular key to make the whole mix work, and my own song "the Jam" turned up in the list. I originally did not want to use it but decided to rework it and I changed my mind! Also, I'd say my own remix of Yse's "Guessing Games" is kind of special to me because I don't think I've ever spent that long working on a remix. it was started in October 2010 and I kind of finished it in late January. I worked on it every other day, it was a real labour of love. It took a long time but I'm happy with the result :)

What's your next release lined up after this compilation drops?

I have a track coming out on Drop Music soon after, as well as a joint EP with Joshua Heath, out later this year on Lost My Dog. I also have a few remixes in the works, including one on Vernon & Dacosta's Homecoming Music label. I am also still working on my debut artist album.

Any upcoming gigs do you have that you are particularly excited about?

My launch party at Fabric is the biggest show I've ever had so far in my small career and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm also really curious and excited to play in Prague on May 20th, so that should be really fun too.

What would you say is your best experience from all the gigs you have played?

I'd say the best experience was actually not playing but hearing my music out for the first time. Shortly after sending out my first demo I went to see DJ Heather at Fabric in London. She'd kindly put me on the guest list and before her show started I cheekily asked her if she thought she was gonna play any of my stuff on the night, to which she replied "maybe"â I was so scared I'd pissed her off, telling her what to do etcÉ So anyway she came on, she opened with my track "Jus Trippin", going onto another of my track, onto another one, then to another oneÉ She basically played the entire cd I'd sent her back-to-back, all 7 odd tracks!!! And it sounded so LOUD! I can honestly say that to this day it has been the most amazing house music-related experience in my life!

How about the worst?

I've been really lucky and don't feel I've ever had a really bad experience DJing. Some crappy gigs with rubbish sound and no-one there, I've had some for sure, but I always enjoy myself :)

What got you into house music and made you want to DJ and produce your own music?

My friend Vinz, with who I produce with under the name "Bobby & Klein". He played me "Superdiscount" and "Homework" for the first time. I was hooked. He also introduced me to this music software called AcidÉ That was the beginning, back in 1999, 2000É So I owe it all to him really.

Which artists do you look up and influence your sound?

I listen to a lot of music so there are always new people that influence me and that I try to emulate in my productions but I'd say that the Lawnchair Generals and the Inland Knights have both had a really strong influence on my sound. Maybe a bit less now but without these 2 acts there's no way my music would have been what it is now.

You have had the chance to work with quite a few of our favorite producers so far such as Fred Everything, JT Donaldson and Lawnchair Generals. Out of everyone you collaborated with, who was it the easiest and most natural to work on music with?

I actually always find collaborations quite difficult because of my unability to relax when somebody else is in the room. With JT I was just showing him how to use Ableton and it ended up with a track! Joshua Heath is pretty cool to work with, quite natural. He's a bass player and I'm a drummer so I guess we have a similar approach to musicÉ Nathan G is fun to work with too: We have another project in the works together, and I also did some wicked tracks with Carlos from LCG during my last US tour. Just need to finish all these now :)

Did you have any musical experience before getting into DJing and Producing house music?

I'm a drummer and percussionist and still do gigs and sessions every month. It keeps me in practise and is always super fun to do.

What type of gear do you use in the studio and what type of gear do you prefer to play on at shows?

I play cds when DJing and use Ableton in the studio. You can find out more about it here...

Have you ever dabbled in any other genres besides deep and funky house?

Yeah sure, I have a go at lots of stuff, down tempo stuff, dubsteppy things, big-room type things. Especially making this album I'm trying out lots of different genres, I love it.

If you had the opportunity to work with any musician in the world who would it be?

Well unfortunately they're all deadÉ My dream would have been to work with Jaco Pastorius and Joe Zawinul, but I'll have to say Herbie Hancock then. And Michael Mcdonald!!

We're always delighted when we come across music from a DJ that we are not familiar with, but this instance right here makes us feel like we have been missing out on something great for far too long. We don't know too much about him, but we have read that Ingo Sänger has been DJ'ing for over 20 years and hosted a radio show from 1995-2004 on the German station WDR 1 Live. He currently has a radio show on Byte.FM and has a residency at Taxi Nights @ Domicil in Dortmund. He also runs the label Farside Records with his partner Winni Petersmann and produces tracks as part of the duo Westpark Unit (Herb LF) and also works in the studio with Matt Flores and Henry L. You will hear some of their work in the mix embedded below and it is tasty.

This mix he did for the Berlin Nucast has one of the best track selections we have ever seen. It's very well programmed and every track hits the spot to make the Deep House craving inside us very happy. What's even more impressive is that a few of the tracks are produced by himself or his close friends. If you need some deep house in your life then do not sleep on this mix. It's A+ work and we couldn't be happier to have a new favorite artist to follow around.

Butch is a world wide phenomenon that has brought a fresh new sound to house music by blending house, tech house, and techno together to create his own signature sound that is garnering fans from all corners of the planet. He's played in dozens of countries over the last few years and has had nearly 300 tracks released including the ever so popular track 'No Worries' that took dance floors by storm last year. He also found the time to start a label called 'Bouq' with his studio partner AMIR and friends Sebastian Lutz and Caio Dunca. Butch's footprint on the house and tech house scene has been large but well deserved.

Thanks to the great folks at Dance Trippin TV we are able to experience our favorite DJ's playing their music in a way we never could before. Stompy.com got a chance to sit down with Dave Pezzner and ask him some questions about his past life as one half of 'Jacob London', his Live performance, and get the details on Dave's horse meat eating experience. We had to share this as it's a wonderful read and a great interview with one of our absolute favorite artists. Long before the wild popularity of the sound now associated with the likes of Dirtybird, Gramophonedzie, Dubstep and Electro, there once was a couple of producers from Seattle named Dave & Bob that showed up unannounced and uninvited on House Music's doorstep at the turn of the century. They came with a sound not heard around the normal parts--choppy beats, animal noises, squirrel references, cut-up samples, funky basslines and general monkey business. To confuse the masses even more, they used a single name Jacob London, and labels as diverse as Classic, OM Records, Trapez and Dotbleep snatched up their beats and they ushered in a fresh face to house music that still carries its influence into the sound of today.

During this time, one half of the duo started shaping an entire new sound on his own, and just as they used their creative, forward thinking approach to reshape funky house music, Pezzner took that same approach and helped change the face of deep, moody house music. In under four years, Pezzner has managed to rack up remixes for Groove Armada, Ghostly International and Room With a View, find a new musical home on Freerange, release his first artist album, "The Tracks Are Alive", and was chosen to hand pick a selection of his favorite tracks from the Tonicsole catalog. And that's not including numerous other projects including his new live show and new addition to the Pezzner family.

As fans from the very beginning, we had to have a chat with Dave about his new road traveled and get a peek inside the mind of an artist who thinks about music--and life in general--in a much different way than most.

Stompy - All right, lets get the business stuff out of the way......How has the ride been since you released the album on Freerange last year?

Pezzner - Its been amazing. The feedback I’ve received from people has been fantastic. I’ve also been traveling a lot more lately for shows. I love touring and meeting people, and getting to share my music like this. Its really a dream come true.

Stompy - You and Bob created your own unique sound with Jacob London in the early 2000's, and now your solo work still stands out just as unique amongst many of the styles its classified with, yet is still very distinctive as your own individual sound. Is there intention in your creative process to make a particular style of track, or are you a "fire it up and wing it" style of producer?

Pezzner - Yes, I’m definitely using the same sort of creative ethic I had doing my own stuff as I do when I produce music with Bob. We always take an experimental approach to the music we made and aimed for our tracks to be bizarre and funky. It’s a musical habit that’s hard to break. I feel that my best work is done when I start way out in the left field. Of course I like there to be some common ground between the experimental sounds and the more organic and familiar sounds so there’s always a point when I’m producing, where I find myself trying to bring the track back to reality a bit.

Stompy - As your music is so unique, do you tend to draw inspirations from other artists or songs, technology, or your enviornment around you?

Pezzner - Yeah I definitely take queues from my surroundings and I hear music in all sorts of things. I like to listen to the background when I’m in places like restaurants and bars. Its seems like if you listen carefully you can find music in everything, and at the strangest times I’ll get an idea for a hook. Lately I’ve been listening to ambient music, and I think I’ve been pretty influenced by groups like Zoviet France, and Sun O))), and really soothing artists like Hauchka and Swod… Cliff Martinez.

Stompy - You've started developing a live show and taking it on the road. What has been the biggest challenge in making the switch from a DJ to a live performer?

Pezzner - The live show has been my ever-evolving project. It’s a lot of work, but I think its crucial to what I do. I’m not a terribly idealistic person when it comes to music but I do believe that the best way for any artist to represent their work on a stage is through doing a live performance. It seems like dance music might be the only genre where it’s acceptable for a producer to DJ as their only means of performance. And while I have immense respect for the art of DJing, and the talent that many artists bring to the DJ booths of the world, I really feel like there should be more... at least in my case. That’s not to say that I don’t DJ, or I prefer to play live. But I feel like its important that DJ sets are not the only way I perform.
I put together the first “Pezzner” show for the Decibel Festival in September of 2007 and, the set has grown immensely. I usually add several of my songs to the set before each tour, and now the project is gigantic. Last night in Montesarchio Italy, I was able to play a 3 ½ hour live set, which is something I never thought Id be able to do. The hard part is just preparation. Each song takes hours to set up. So if I want to add 4 or 5 songs to the set, preparation could take all week.
Another issue is that my live show isn’t always right for the venue or the audience. Looking back to a show I played on Halloween in San Francisco in 2008 it was a bit awkward. I was the only one doing a live show and all of the DJs were playing electro house and mashups. My live set is pretty deep and heady in comparison so there was no real way for me to match my style to theirs. If I were booked to DJ, I could have probably found something in my bag to match what they were doing… maybe haha!

Stompy - What has been the most rewarding part of the switch?

Pezzner - I would definitely say the most rewarding part of playing live is the fact that I am sharing my music directly with the dancefloor in a much more pure sense then if I were djing. Ive just integrated Native Instruments Maschine to my set, and hopefully by my next tour, I’ll be writing music on the fly and programming beats live on the stage. Its exciting!

Stompy - Congrats on the upcoming tile of 'Dad'. Do you have a plan of action to get your child to follow in the Pezzner footsteps?

Pezzner - Yes! We’ve been playing music to her belly and hopefully our baby will have some musical instincts. I’m not going to pressure our child though, all we can do is enjoy music with our baby at first and we’ll go from there

Stompy - What's with all the squirrel references with Jacob London?

Pezzner - Oh that… yeah. We were all about themes. I remember for a while were putting a sheep sound in every song. It was our “thing”. Then I love the idea that for a while with our tracks we were Droppin ‘Squirrels’. The Jacob London project is way too much fun.

Stompy - Will we ever see a Jacob London reunion or farewell tour?

Pezzner - We’re making new music now. I don’t know when it will get released, or who we’ll release with, but we’re making stuff. It doesn’t sound as ‘Jacob Londony’ as it used to but we’re still having fun with it.

Stompy - So you've accomplished an album, multiple record deals, a live show, touring, creating music for video games and now parenthood. What's next to cross off the Pezzner To-Do list?

Pezzner - Good question! To be honest I hadn’t thought things out past this point. It seemed like my whole life goal was to get to a point in my music where I can support my family and see the world. I’m doing that now, and I think the most important thing is that I keep it going for as long as I can. I’m working on my 2nd LP for Freerange now, and we’ll see this release February of 2012, so I know I’ll be going for at least another year.

Stompy - Are you a video game, TV, Movie or Book guy?

Pezzner - I’m not much of a video game guy. Its funny because I tried to pursue a career doing music for video games back in 2006. I did all sorts of research on the field and even submitted demos, resumes to several companies. Then I was having a conversation with another audio guy about the games we like, then it hit me.. I don’t even really like video games! I rarely play games any more.
But TV, I watch Daily Show and Colbert every night, and I like to read when I’m on tour. Right now I’m reading “Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of The Earth” by Haruki Murakami – who’s books I adore.

Stompy - Beach or Lake?

Pezzner - Beach, definitely.

Stompy - Cows or Horses?

Pezzner - I tried some cured horse meat here in Italy today! I’m in Rome right now. I think that I don’t need to eat horse anymore. I couldn’t get the idea of the horse out of my head when I was eating it. Besides it was way too gamey. …and that’s my eating-horse story.

Stompy - Zoo or Aquarium?

Pezzner - Aquarium. Every time I get excited to go and visit a zoo, I get really depressed seeing all these animals trapped. Aquairums also have otters and otters fucking rule.

Stompy - Favorite coffee shop in Seattle?

Pezzner - B+O Espresso, hands down.

Stompy - Favorite pair of shoes?

Pezzner - I got a pair of shoes from Onitska Tiger last year at the WMC. They are metallic gold and white and black and have Toki Doki designs all over them. When I put them on they are obscenely loud and kinda look like they are made of magic.

Stompy - You're stuck on a deserted island and only have one meal to eat forever besides coconuts. What would it be?

Pezzner - It would be Sushi. I cant eat enough of the stuff.

Stompy - What's in your ipod?

Pezzner - Mux Mool, Maps and Atlases, Luke Abbot, James Blake, Larytta, Tangerine Dream, When Saints Go Machine, Super Flu, Hanssen, Foals, Das Glow, Baths, The Cure, Caribou, Floating Points, Louis CK.

Stompy - Tapatio, Cholula or Tabasco? Don't say Tabasco.

Pezzner - Tapatio! It’s the only condiment that I ever run out of, which is kinda gross now that I think about it. I should probably clean out the fridge.

An Interview with the Sensational Brazilian House Duo 'Anhanguera'

Dudu and Décio of Anhanguera were nice enough to take some time out of their busy schedule of producing and DJing to answer a few questions for us here at House Heads Anonymous. They are part of the new generation of funky and jackin house producers and have released tracks on respectable labels such as Robsoul, Minority, Tango, Guesthouse, and Good Family. Influenced by classic disco, jazz, and hip hop they collaborate to make some fresh funky and deep house tunes on the regular. To get a taste of their production and DJ sounds you can peep a mix and a player at the bottom of the page with all of their tracks released on Stompy. Without further ado, let's get to the interview questions and let you start jamming to hot house music from south of the equator.

How did the two of you meet and
begin working on music together?

We are friends since childhood. We started playing together in the 90's at small parties. Then in 2004 came the idea of starting a project together to produce the house music we so feel

How's the music scene in Brazil? Did your perspective on it change from before you started working on music to after you started producing and DJing?

Yes. Definently! Before, we have no idea we could making a living on house music in Brazil. Even when we started producing we were a bit skeptic. But, we believed in our potential and started to invest in the career, improving the productions and working on contacts with promoters and other djs. It took time and a lot of effort. Now we are in the biggest dj agency in Brazil and gigs really contribute in our budget. House music in Brazil is getting strong these days and we believe that we have contributed in this perspective. When everybody was playing minimal and electro we were insisting in house music.

Any chance the two of you will move away your home country in the near future?

Not now. We believe we still have great perspective in Brazil. Our name is getting stronger locally.

What are your insipirations that made you both want to start creating music instead of just listening to it?

We wanted to share our emotions and contribuite somehow for the scene evolution. Doing music is also a good way to promote ourselves as djs.

Any plans to do a live production act in the future? or do you prefer to stick to traditional DJing?

We prefer traditional djing. Maybe we could add some different resources or do a presentation with a singer. But still, we have a lot of fun and emotion doing traditional djing. We feel it's more human than playing with a computer.

What hardware and software do you have in your studio?

We use computer where we got FL Studio, Acid, Cubase, Sound Forge and a couple of VSTs all contolled by Oxygen8. Also we have a analog Roland JP8080.

Do you have a favorite piece of equipment or a favorite program that you use?

FL Studio, Acid Pro and Cubase are the programs we use but we believe the thing is not the programs, it is what you do with them.

What type of gear do you prefer to play on when you play out?

The sensation of playing in vinyl is very cool. It is like touching the music. But, a few places are really prepared for vinyl nowadays. We also love to play on three cdjs using acapellas and mixers with filters.

What's the dynamic like between the two of you in the studio?

We used to stay togheter in the studio to do music, but as we live in different cities we've realized that would be more effective if we discuss the ideas togheter and dudu, the "geek part of Anhanguera, finalizes the work after we come to a comon sense. Still, we both have the job to research references, samples and new sounds.

Tell us about your first gig together, even if it wasn't playing house music.

It was at a 15 year old's birthday party we were hired to play. We were very young and we had to play everything from disco to brazilian music. But we started playing some flashhouse like Take That - Religh My Fire when the crowd went crazy. That was the first time we realized the potential of house music for every crowd.

How about the first party you played house/dance music at?

As Anhanguera our first gig was in party hosted by MTV in Ribeirão. It was a great nite we played at the time with Luiz Pareto and Jamanta crew. Real underground jackin for a big crownd in Ribeirão Preto.

Do you have any gigs coming up that you are both really excited about?

Two gigs in Miami for 2011 WMC: Robsoul/Sneakbeats party and Hawt/Fiasco party. Both on the 11th of March. We also are very excited about a party in Rio Preto called 'We Love' on March 19th and a gig with Phil Weeke in Clash Club on April 8th.

And lastly, if you had the chance to work on music with any person in
the world, who would it be?

George Michael. Would be nice to do a track with him on the vocals.

Aside from DJing and producing, she also runs her own label called 'Bleenchic' which has tracks on most major dance music download sites. The mix that got us hooked is her mix called 'Swing It' which has a familiar energy that may remind you of funky, tribal house from the early 2000's.

In Memory of Brett Jackson - Rest In Peace

A deep house legend is no longer with us in physical presence, but his music and soul will be with us forever. Born on May 28, 1982, Brett Jackson's passing came all too soon. Here are some words from someone close to him, Sheree O'Brien from Soul Candi music.

"LEGENDARY DJ BRETT JACKSON – GONE TOO SOON
In memory of a soldier 28/05/1982 – 16/02/2011

It is with much sadness that we notify South Africa on the passing of a friend, a brother, a son & a legend - Deep House DJ – Brett Jackson. At 5:45am on Wednesday 16 February 2011, at the age of 28yrs old, Brett Jackson lost his battle to Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer at the Pretoria East Hospital. He leaves behind his father Brian, Mom Colleen, Sister Lee & niece Georgia.

Diagnosed with the disease in November 2008, Brett fought back like a true soldier – even contributing his time and status to the CANSA Organisation’s fundraising courses and contributing a portion of his royalty earnings to the organisation.

Born 28 May 1982, Brett Jackson became known for his soulful deep house sounds - being cross-over and breaking into the urban market scene. With several critically acclaimed compilation series under his belt such as The Deeper Sound of Brett Jackson, Dig Deeper Vol 1 & 2, Soul Select Vol 1-3, The Best of OM & most recently Soul Candi Sessions 5. On an international level, Brett was renowned - From Cape Town to Karlsruhe, Durban to Dubai, Brett Jackson has rocked dancefloors across Belgium, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Switzerland, South Africa, Germany, Spain, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and beyond.

Brett Jackson joined the Soul Candi family in 2003 as the record store manager and buyer and was currently the label manager of the Urban Dance division. His contribution to the label saw him compile some of the biggest selling albums the label has ever released. A true music visionary he was.

Much can be said for his life as a DJ – but as a man, he was one of ethics, honour, honesty and privacy and indeed a true soldier.

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to his family and request that the public and media please respect his family’s need for privacy in their time of mourning.

REST IN PEACE BRETT JACKSON. YOU ARE LOVED & MISSED BY YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS & FANS.

Phil Weeks has a new album coming out that will be available on February 25, 2011 that we couldn't be more excited about. He's a master sampler and has an ear to find classic songs that transform beautifully into house music. He is one half of the gradually rising Kruse & Nuernberg duo and brings the house music proper in this amazing 2.5 hour recording of his set at the monthly 'Music Is Everything' night at the Nu Spirit Club in Bratislava in March of this year.

We came across a couple of terrific mixes for the heads over the last week. First up is a live mix from the Lovebirds from Guru Club in Tiblisi Georgia just a few days ago on 11/26/10. New Lovebirds Tunes and a Top 10 Chart from Freerange Records' Jimpster

November is usually a fun month for dance music. As the weather changes around the world so do the underlying feelings in the songs we hear. Deep house was good to us here in the States this summer and Lovebirds and Jimpster both were bright spots in our summer. First let's take a listen to a couple new Lovebirds tracks that should be out this month. Both of them are solid songs, but 'Love & Happiness' tickled our soul and is an instant classic in our opinion. This track starts out as a good house track off the bat with a nice familiar fun bassline, but as the song progresses the track transforms into something beyond spectacular, all with the addition of one sound which becomes prevalent just before the 1 minute mark. You can tell by listening to his other tunes that Lovebirds is a guy that can appreciate and understand the simple things in all music and this track is a great example of how one sound can change the expression of a track so much. We also included a preview of the other track on this release titled 'The Rain' which will feature a remix from Steve Bug.

An Interview with Giano - A Self Taught House Music Machine

Ian 'Giano' Lujan took some time with us to run through an interview and give us all a little more insight as to who he is and where his music comes from. Thank you Giano, we really appreciate it. For those unaware, Giano is a well respected and established producer and DJ in the house music scene. He also runs his own label called Italiano Recordings. Tell us about your DJ name, how did you come about choosing 'Giano'?

Giano Is Italian For Ian , My Grandfauther did not like Ian, He called me Giano.
Guess you can say it stuck :)

So house head to house head, what is it about house music that sucked you in?

I have always been interested in Music. My dad was a Musician. House brought a lot of
elements of all the music i grew up to listening and loved all together.

When did you get into DJing and producing?

I got into djing when i was 16. I started producing in 2004.

Who are some of the artists you looked up to and that have influenced
your sound?

Hector Morales, Tony Hewitt ,Mark Farina, DJ Heather, Colette, Fred Everything,Just to name a few. These artists and more grew on me while i started makin music. I really loved thier production and thier skill at djing. Was very inspiring watching and hearing these artists.

Let's get technical, what kind of gear would we find in your studio?

Is there a specific piece of hardware or software you use the most favor?

Ableton Live 8,Acid Pro 7 and every VST i have :)

What kind of set up do you prefer to play on at gigs?

2 Pioneer Cdj's Mk3 or higher , Rain ROtary , Allen N Heath xone 92 or Pioneer DJM 800 or better.

Any plans for a live PA?

I have done it once before by my self. No plans to do it any time soon. I dont have anyone near to colab with to do what i want, I live in the sticks.

Have you ever considered 'selling out' and producing more commercial
'pop' dance music?

Sure .. why not. If a opportunity came to make a track or 2 for a huge label and they wanted it pop and it went comercial, that is fine with me :)This is what I do for a living and if opportunity knocks I will have the door wide open to further my career. I wont ever stop producing the kind of house I make now though.

How did Italiano Recordings come about? any plans for the label in the future?

Italiano came about in 06. Im Italian Yes ... lol So i made the name Itliano Recordings, go figure ..haha. It was my plan with the label and still is to release ALL genre's of music, not just house. I wanted not only to put out music of my own but learn all the "How To's" In the Indy Label Biz. So far so good!

Tell us about the first party that you went to and what that experience was like for you.

My first party i went to when i was 13 at a old boxing ring, they gutted out the whole place and turned it into a underground spot. Was Pretty dope. They played a alot of Hard House back then and the place was LOUD. I remember some guy comming up and saying "Hey you want some Molocules" ... i asked my friend what the heck is that? Turned out to Be E.LOL.. I didnt take ;) I was always looking for a place that would play house music, and i found it in the underground.

How about your first gig?

My First gig was a house party. Dont remeber too much BESIDE it was a GREAT night HAHA. What i do remember most is I ended up playing till everyone left the next morning :)

Tell us a little about your production technique, What's your favorite part about writing music?

I guess i can say i stick to my own formula sometimes , but other times i try and stray away and learn more by exploring what i dont know.As for as Technique goes, I defenetly learned muisc MOSTLY on my own so you can say my Technique is my own. I have never been able to afford to go to school for Music engineering or Study, so i have learned what i can from reading and surfing the net. You would be amazed what you can lean on youtube tutorials and some dedication to reading articles. My favorite part of making music is making tracks of all kinds and trying to make them ALL sound different. I have never tried to stick to one style of music , wich is what makes me love it so much. There is so much good music to choose from.

Is there anyone that you would like to collaberate with that you haven't already worked with?

Honestly ...Justin Timberlake ;) HUGE FAN

What do you do in your spare time when you aren't in the lab with a pen and a pad?

Play Playstation 3 ,Spend time with my Wife, family and friends.

And finally, the question everyone is dying to have answered, What do you order at chipotle?

Sadly i have never Been there :(

Freaky First Impression - Getting Funky with 'Freaky Behaviour'

Here's a live mix from a pair of jocks out in in Leeds known as 'Freaky Behaviour'. Mark (crumbs) Crummay and Joey Burkitt have been house heads and friends for some time now but recently started producing tracks together. They had their first release 'Gotta Make Traxx' on Ficus Tree Music in January this year and all 3 tracks charted on Stompy.com's Top 100. Their second release was solid as well. Mark & Joey say that House, Motown, Funk, Blues, Soul, Disco, 80's groove, Breaks and Hip Hop are their major influences and it all comes together to create a very fresh and fun house sound. The Swing House Phenomenon is more than just a House Head - H.H.A. Interviews Wattie Green + Wattie's Latest Promo Mix & Sneak Peaks at his New Tracks

If you aren't familiar with Wattie Green by now then you should probably grab a pen and a pad, throw on some headphones, and get ready to take some notes as Wattie tells about getting his first tracks signed, playing the banjo, and producing hip hop music. Hailing from Nashville, TN, Wattie has been a busy man lately and has lead us to believe that he may have even went to the Hogwarts school for house music because he has been doing some magic in the studio. He has a a solid new release coming out on Flapjack Records soon (which you can preview at the bottom), and his release that just dropped September 1st on the label 'Serial Sickness' is as funky fresh and swingin' as ever. Without further ado, here is our interview with one of our favorites, Mr. Wattie Green.

So Wattie, how long have you been DJing for and how long have you been producing?

I have been DJing for about 12 years. I got my first setup in 1998 and have been at it ever since. They were cheap belt drive tables and a 2 channel mixer. About a year and a half later I bought Technics. Still rockin' those now!

I have been working on production for about 8 years. I started with a Boss Dr. Rhythm and a guitar FX processor. Shortly after I started using Fruity Loops version 1 on my PC.

What could one expect to see in your studio? Are you a hardware or a software guy?

I currently use F.L Studio 9. Cubase SX 3, and Glodwave for cutting up samples. Most of what I do is software based. I spend a lot of time going through old jazz, funk and blues music.

We know this might be hard to recall after years of partying, but can you tell us about the first party you went to?

The first big party I went to was in 1997 in Nashville ,TN at The Canery. Many great parties were thrown there and at the old Marathon Motor Works building in the late 90's. Some of my first shows were headlined by Paul Johnson, Stacey Kidd, Bad Boy Bill, Mystic Bill, Boo Williams, The Teamsters, Phantom 45, and Dj Odi. Ahh, those were the days.

How about the first real gig you had?

I started out DJing house parties and occasionally at clubs in Memphis. I think the first time I got paid to DJ was at a club in Memphis called 'The Dungeon'.

What sparked your interest to become a DJ and producer instead of just a head at the shows?

After the seeing some DJ and live PA performances at the first big party I attended, I knew I wanted to DJ and produce my own tunes.

Have you ever dabbled, either DJing or production, in any other dance music genre besides house music?

Yes, I love to play Jungle/Drum & Bass and Hip Hop records. I've also been known to write hip hop beats for local rappers.

Word has it that you are a fairly talented musician outside of just dance music and can play a number of different instruments, what all do you know how to play?

When I was about 10yrs old, my Dad showed me how to play guitar and I've been at that ever since. I also play upright bass and banjo. I often enjoy playing any one of those acoustic instruments with my friends and parents. I'm into Bluegrass, Oldtime, Jazz, Blues and Gypsy Swing.

Have you done any live performances with those instruments?

I perform with friends at our some of our local festivals and camp outs. Mostly just for fun.

How did you meet J-Caprice and how did that translate to getting your first tracks signed onto 'Juiced Music'?

J Caprice hit me up after hearing some of my unreleased tunes from a DJ friend of mine (DJ Josh aka DJ Jessie). As they were getting ready to launch the label, Juiced Music signed some tracks of mine. Then Frankie J at Flapjack/Spatula City Records heard some of my stuff and immediately released my first EP.

What inspired you to push the 'Swing House' sound?

I always favored the jazzy style of house from the likes of Pepe Bradock, Ricky Bradshaw, Stacey Kidd and Mark Farina. I set out to find old jazz tunes that could be reworked into house music.

And Lastly, now that you have a couple of EP's and some remix work under your belt, do you have any exciting collaborations or projects that you are working on?

I'm currently working on collaborations and remixes with Biboulakis for G-Swing, Jeff Dougler & Balu for GreenHouse, Camouflage for Ficus Tree, Funk Mediteraneo for Blockhead, Lusty Leg for Juiced, Precious Roy for Juiced, and a couple with Hugh C from Detroit.

We are back after a short hiatus in Las Vegas, and we have a very special mix for you all. We got the tip off for this mix from Wattie Green. Chad Ehlert is his buddy out in Nashville, TN. We don't know a whole lot about this fellow, but we do know that this mix is killer. Not overly jacking but very funky, almost reminiscent of the days when DJ Dan knew what good funky house was. She got her start DJing at a neighborhood pub called the 'Artful Dodger' and is known around Chicago as primarily a hip hop DJ. Now plays huge parties and notorious venues around the world. "It was never a conscious effort to play one genre more than another. I've always been interested in all forms of music. The demand for me to play house seemed to increase after each gig. An Interview with Eddie Leader - From Mixtapes to EP's

Eddie Leader is no stranger to the house music scene, he is a DJ and Producer from the U.K. that has over 15 releases under his belt. He and 2 of his close friends (Danny White & Rucky) created the house trio named 'Slum Science' which has had the support of big name DJ's such as Mark Farina, Josh Wink, Derrick Carter and many others. In 2005, Slum Science launched a label called 'Hudd Traxx' which has released tracks from the likes of DJ Sneak, Iz & Diz, JT Donaldson, Lil’ Mark, Phil Weeks, Alexander East, Miles Maeda & Brett Johnson. Eddie was nice enough to sit down and answer some questions for us to help give some insight on who he is and where he came from. Questions and answers along with some music from the man himself are below. Thank you Eddie for taking the time to do the interview for us House Heads!

So Eddie, When did you decide you wanted to be involved with electronic dance music, and more specifically house music, as more than just a party goer? What sparked that interest for you to become a DJ and Producer?

I started DJing in 1997. My close friend Danny White was really into house music as his brother had loads of mix tapes from hard times & back 2 basics so we were listening to them and I really liked it. We started going to basics that year. Danny had some belt drive decks, think they were Kam BDX 180's. My first decks were Sony Rotary's, I had them for a year or so, then got some Kams and then I got the 1210's I still own today. After that the usual route of local gigs and a residency at univeristy followed. As for being more than just a party goer i'm still one of those for sure. That's where it all started for me - on the dancefloor, that's where it's at. These DJ's who think they're too cool to dance and stand behind the DJ booth all night do my head in. It's boring behind the DJ booth unless you're playing or there's a bottle of Jaeger there. That's why I named that track DJ's Don't Dance. I have never understood that, I guess some people DJ for the wrong reasons. The best place to be in a club is on the dancefloor. Anyway, as for deciding to be a DJ & Producer I never thought about it too much I just used to practice on Danny's decks and loved it so decided to buy some decks and here I am today doing the same thing :-)

Was there a specific DJ or producer that really hit the spot for you or were you just a fan of all the dance music in general?

I think the first real producer I got into was DJ Sneak, all his old Polyester EP's etc. Used to love Gemini, Mood II Swing, Chez Damier, Carter, Gene Farris, Todd Terry, Grant Nelson, Basement Boys, Herbert. I was a big fan of the Chicago sound back in the day, not so much anymore as I think the new stuff is nowhere near as strong but the early stuff was a massive influence on me.

Can you recall the first party you went to? How did you feel about that experience?

Do you know what I can't. But I know the first time I went to a house club was at the age of 15 at Back 2 Basics in Leeds. Don't even know who was playing to be honest but it was sweet!

How about the first real gig you had?

I used to have a residency in Huddersfield so that was probably my 1st gig, just a bar thing, it was pretty cool, probably in 1998.

Do you still get excited or nervous before gigs at all?

I'm always excited before gigs, i'm off to one today at a festival in Wales to celebrate Hudd Traxx 5th Birthday and I can't wait! Nerves depends really, sometimes I do it depends on the gig, I definitely have adrenelin but then if you didnt it would be boring. I'm sure footballers get nerves when they're stepping out infront of crowds so i'd say most DJ's I know do get a little nervous, even if they don't admit it.

Do you prefer DJing to producing or vice versa?

Well I started out as a DJ and it's more fun to me as you're interacting with people on the same level. The buzz you get off DJing is totally different to Producing. DJing is an instant buzz when you're in the moment whereas production is a longer lasting buzz i'd say as it takes a while to make a track and you can always listen back to it whereas DJing gigs are just memories once you've finished a gig (Unless you record the set, haha). I do love it when you nail a bass line or something like that though and you start dancing to yourself in the studio, haha if anyone saw me i'd look like a right idiot.

We know you have played all over the UK and quite a few places across the US, is there anywhere specifically you favor more than the others? Anywhere that you didn't really feel the vibe?

I'd say my favourite place to play at the moment is Romania. The crowd are really up for it there. House hasn't been around for as long there so it's all quite a new phenomenon, it's fresh, there's no pretentiousness there which you can get sometimes in the UK, everyone is friendly and they love good music. I used to love playing at Mad Hatters in Leeds, the atmosphere there was second to none. I recently started a night with my friends in Manchester called Content, the atmosphere we've created here is similar to that at Hatters, people screaming at the ceiling type carry on. Search Kenny Larkin @ Content Manchester video on youtube and you'll see what I mean. I also love playing in San Francisco cos there's load of warehouse parties, although I heard the Police have been cracking down on them recently.

In regards to DJing gear, for the longest time everyone used turn tables and now the options are almost endless. How do you feel about the evolution of the DJing technology?

Hmmmm. I'm unsure on this. For ages we kept Hudd Traxx vinyl only and also never bought any mp3's. Then a load of distributors went bust so we started selling digi and I have also bought a fair bit recently, probably out of pure laziness. I still prefer playing vinyl and travel with it all the time. My last tour to the states was the only time i've never brought vinyl to a gig and that was just cos I was there for a while and it was Christmas. I hate looking through CD's and not remembering what the track is, with vinyl you know what it is as soon as you see the artwork. Also I'm not sure a DJ can call themself a DJ if they've never played any vinyl, it's what it's all about isn't it? It's too easy these days for kids to just download shit, you don't have to go crate digging to find gems to everyone is playing the same shit. On my last trip to Romania I played half vinyl half cds, I started pulling out old Grant Nelson & Todd Terry tracks and they went down a treat cos noone had heard them before, can't beat that early 90's sound on vinyl. However, I do realise the benefits of the digital era and realise you have to move with the times. It also means music can reach people who can't afford vinyl. That being said it does piss me off that people file share, even producers are doing this. You can't expect people to pay for your music and then go on soulseek and download loads of shit for free, hypocritical to say the least. That's a major positive of vinyl, it wasn't like you could just go and copy someones vinyl, I know you can record it but it sure makes things more difficult.

How did the 'Slum Science' trio come together?

When I got back from University Danny had been making music so me him & Rucky started producing together under the Slum Science name, from that Hudd Traxx was formed. Everything just kinda happened without thinking about it to be honest, there was never any plan & there still isn't to this day.

Personally, we love the tracks you all have released as 'Slum Science'. It sounds as if it is a pretty natural partnership, was it easy working as a group with Danny White & Rucky or do the three of you ever experience any significant bumps in the road?

As I was saying we're all really close friends from being kids so it was a natural thing really, it just made sense as we all loved house music. I wouldn't say we had any significant bumps, ofcourse being friends you have the odd fall out here and there but nothing a beer at the spinks nest (pub) wouldn't solve.

Any plans for more Slum Science tracks in the future?

Recently I moved to manchester and the boys both had kids (not with eachother - well that's what they tell me) so it's difficult to find time for all 3 of us to work together. Danny & Rucky still do stuff under the Non Believers alias but I think they find it hard to find time even when there's 2 of them. I'm sure at somepoint we will do another record together though. I actually did this interview in 2 halfs a few weeks apart so I went to the gig in Wales I was telling you about (Hoofer Doofer) and I played there with Rucky. It was Hudd's 5th birthday and it was awesome to play with him for the first time in years, we played for 4 hours and the room was rammed all night and it went off. Unfortunately Danny couldn't make it cos he just had another baby. I guess Rucky wears the trousers in that relationship.

Out of your very impressive discography of solo work, is there one specific track that you are more proud of than the rest?

There is actually but it's not out yet and I don't want to say anything until it's out ;-) I think i'm most proud of my last EP which is called GILK EP. Mainly because I think it's the best music i've made, also it was nice to get Rolando on the remix. The most fun I had making a record was probably Slum Science n' Hector Moralez - Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Zoooom, that was a right laugh.

And lastly, would you prefer that the vibe of the house music scene stays thick and underground, or would you like to see the mainstream clubs, crowds, and radio stations start to support the music more?

Underground is where it's at and always will be for me. I think mainstream brings idiots to the table and people who are into music for the scene and not for the music. You can see this happening a little bit at the moment because deep house is becoming popular again. All the kids that were into trance when it was big then went on to tech house, then minimal, now it's house. It annoys me that people just jump on the latest bandwagon. All these people are into it for the wrong reasons in my opinion. Most of them have no clue about the history of house or infact what decent music is, they will just follow what ever is cool at any particular time. They're more interested in what their haircut or clothes look like than they are in dancing to real music with real people - rant over :-) Having said that I would like to see house being played on more underground stations.

DJ Bones is one of the master minds involved with The Roots (Denver). He let us pick his brain for a little bit and donated a quality live mix for your listening enjoyment. Let's get down to business with the interview.

HHA: Let's start with something basic. Bones, where did your dj pseudonym come from? Any special meaning behind the name?

Bones:

It's a nickname I earned in college, right around the time I started DJing, so naturally, it stuck. The obvious reason for the nickname is that I was (and still am) very skinny. There are other stories behind the nickname as well but you'll have to ask me about them over a beer

HHA: When did you decide you wanted to be involved with electronic dance music as more than just a party goer? What sparked that interest for you to become a DJ?

Bones:

Growing up in the mountains, there wasn't much exposure to dance music events in my town. I was, however, one of the weird kids that listened to electronic music despite never having been to a party. Around that time, the formerly independent radio station KTCL used to play stuff by Orbital, The Orb, Daft Punk, etc and that was really my first true exposure to electronic music. I got into artists like that before I knew anything about DJing.

My freshman year of college, I became friends with some people who were experienced ravers. They took me to my first parties; I saw the DJs playing, and from that point on I was hooked.

HHA: Was there a specific DJ or producer that really hit the spot for you or were you just a fan of all the dance music in general?

Bones:

I kinda started ass-backwards. I got into artists like Aphex Twin and Orbital long before I got into DJs like Sasha and Digweed playing what I'd call more accessible music. The Northern Exposure series of CDs are really what turned that around for me and got me into the whole DJ culture.

HHA: Can you recall the first party you went to? How did you feel about that experience?

Bones:

There are two different parties that I would classify as my first. Technically, I think the first party I went to was KTCL's Big Adventure, which was an outdoor event at the base of Copper Mountain to see the Propellerheads (although it was just one of the two guys doing a DJ set, I didn't really know this at the time). I was by myself and didn't stay for very long as I didn't really know anyone there. I caught some of Aphrodite's set that night too, that was probably the first time I had ever heard jungle.

The first "real" party I went to was Flashback '99 at the roller rink in Longmont, and that was really the catalytic moment for me when I decided I wanted to do more than just dabble in DJing.

HHA: How about the first real gig you had?

Bones:

For the first few years I was a bedroom DJ, occasionally playing a house party or the like. My first real gig was at the legendary Soma nightclub in Boulder in early 2002. My friend Kurt Yates was the Saturday night resident at the time, and he brought me on as a guest DJ. I played twice there in January (still have the recordings of both sets, in fact), and then a month later for my 22nd birthday.

The experience was nothing like I had felt before. Playing to a crowd like that, getting a positive reaction, I knew I was in it for the long haul. I was fortunate enough to get a chance to play Soma a handful of times after that before it closed its doors for good a few years later.

HHA: Do you still get excited or nervous before gigs at all?

Bones:

Definitely, especially for the bigger gigs. I wouldn't say that I get nervous in the traditional sense, more of a nervous energy that keeps me focused. Once I'm playing though, I pretty much forget everything else.

HHA: What type of gear do you prefer to play on?

Bones:

For the last few years I've been strictly a digital DJ, using a Macbook Pro running Traktor Scratch Pro, which is a tremendous piece of software. Before that, I had a stint using Serato by borrowing other people's hardware and timecode to run it (the software is free). Before that, it was all vinyl and CDs.

With Traktor Scratch, I'm equally comfortable using the timecode media on turntables or cd players, it usually depends on what's available and what other DJs during the night will be doing. I also recently invested in the Kontrol X1 controller, which has given me an extra bit of flexibility in terms of setting loops and running effects, which would otherwise be tedious directly from the laptop keyboard/mouse.

HHA: In regards to DJing gear, for the longest time everyone used turn tables and now the options are almost endless. How do you feel about the evolution of the DJing technology?

Bones:

I've always been a technologist, so I'm fully in favor of the evolution of DJing. I love vinyl and I still have a wall full of records at home, but in fact I actually learned to DJ on some really crappy CD players before I learned how to use turntables. I still usually bring a handful of records with me to a gig just because I can, even though I'm fully a digital DJ otherwise.

HHA: Tell us some more about The Roots (Denver), how did that get started and how did you get involved?

Bones:

Roots is the brainchild of hometown hero Eric Galaviz aka DJ Hipp-E. I got introduced to him via his brother Phil, who used to manage The Shelter (now Bar Standard), which I had a residency at a few years ago. I was involved only indirectly at first; it started as me just doing some extra promotional work for him on the side (emailers, facebook, etc). It's only in the last year or so that I've been more directly in the middle of the logistical and the DJing side of things. I did not play at many of the early Roots events, so the recent opening sets for Lee and Claude VonStroke are a definite shift for me.

HHA: What would you say is your most memorable experience with Roots Denver so far?

Bones:

Opening for Lee Burridge on the main floor of Beta this past June, no question. It was an epic night all around, the turnout was great, and Lee killed it (as usual).

HHA: Do all of you with The Roots (Denver) mostly see eye to eye as professionals or is there ever any turbulence on board?

Bones:

Eric (Hipp-e) and I work great together as we compliment each other really well. He is very much a creative type as you can tell from his prolific production career, and always has lots of ideas about what he wants to do. I'm methodical and detail-oriented, so I am able to take a lot of that and turn it into the discrete tasks involved in keeping people informed about the events.

HHA: You are constantly remarked as one of the best (if not the best) opening DJs in Denver. You have opened for some very notable DJ's such as Lee Burridge, Miguel Migs, Mark Farina, and many others. Of all the headlining DJs you have opened for, do you have a personal favorite?

Bones:

Thank you! I've always been a huge fan of Little Mike as an opener (at his residency at the Church on Quench Thursdays and later the Bassment Sessions at Vinyl), so when he moved to Berlin in 2006 I made it a personal goal to fill in those shoes as much as possible. I still contend that he will be the best opening DJ that Denver will ever have. There's a reason that people like Sasha and Digweed used to specifically ask for him by name to be their opener.

Out of all the people I've opened for, I'd have to say that Lee Burridge is my favorite to open for (twice so far), with Miguel Migs as a close second (four times).

HHA: You are also regarded as a master programmer when it comes to live sets, do you have a specific strategy behind programming a set properly? Any tips for the new generation of DJs?

Bones:

My general strategy is to group a lot of tracks based on a particular mood or energy. When doing opening sets in particular, I try and lay out a selection of tracks that will work for early/middle/late in the night. The beauty of using a DVS like Traktor Scratch is that I can easily organize playlists in this fashion to help me keep everything straight. I find that organizing by BPM is also helpful, as I like to cover a large tempo range, especially in longer sets. So, for example, my early playlists are comprised more of downtempo/midtempo and deeper techy housey stuff, and the later playlists are more upbeat. I don't lay out a specific tracklist ahead of time, but I always go into a set with a general idea of what I want to do (especially when opening for someone else) but with enough flexibility to take it in a completely different direction if the situation warrants it.

HHA: As a DJ that plays downtempo, deep house, funky house, tech house, and some times even some progressive, do you favor any one genre more than the others?

Bones:

It really depends on my mood at any given time. Sometimes the deep techy stuff gets me going, other times I just want to play some big rocking tunes. I will say that anything between 100 and 115bpm is an especially sweet spot for me, regardless of the situation.

HHA: We are aware that you haven't done a whole lot in regards to production but you seem to be fairly savvy about production techniques and we are convinced that you could be a successful producer. Any reason you choose to stay behind the decks instead of in the studio?

Bones:

A lack of free time, honestly. I have a day job that consumes a lot of my life at the moment, and DJing takes up most of what free time I do have, especially on weekends. I have dabbled in producing, and even signed a track way back in 2002 but it never got released. I haven't done much since, aside from the occasional DJ tool or mashup (which are quite a bit less work than writing original music). Every year I make a new years resolution to get back into producing with some seriousness, but it hasn't panned out yet. Next year, right?

HHA: And lastly, any embarrassing or funny stories you care to share with us?

Bones:

Oh there are plenty of stories of accidentally adjusting the wrong knob or fader, ejecting the playing CD, etc, but one of my favorite funny stories is from the time I opened for Miguel Migs at Vinyl when he was touring with the Petalpusher band back in the fall of 2007. I was sick as a dog that night, and my voice sounded like I had a pound of gravel in my throat. Anyways, I played a decent opening set, and then the band did about 45 minutes of live house music. Miguel then came across the room from where the band was set up and played a brief DJ set until closing time. At the end of the night, the crowd was going nuts. Somehow, despite my condition, I ended up being the person who had to get on the mic to tell the crowd to get out. Miguel, being the sly bastard he is, kept triggering the effects on the mixer while my hoarse voice was trying to tell people to close their tabs and tip their bartenders. This, of course, made the crowd even LESS interested in leaving. I glanced over at Miguel and he just had the most devilish grin on his face as if to say "yeah, this is pretty amusing." Meanwhile, behind me Lisa Shaw and Tim Fuller were rocking out in the DJ booth with most of the rest of the band drinking tequila. Good times.

Another one of my favorite stories has to do with a gig I played much earlier in my career. It was a Mardi Gras-themed party at a giant house out in Gunbarrel outside of Boulder. I played at the Snake Pit earlier that night, and then headed directly up to the party afterwards, so we arrived probably about 2:30 or 3am. By this point, everyone was wasted, plenty of people running around naked, the usual debauchery you would expect with Mardi Gras. The DJ booth was set up on a wooden deck overlooking an indoor pool, and I proceeded to jump right on the decks and rock out some good proggy and techy stuff. The crowd, in their state, was absolutely loving it. I'll never forget people dancing in the pool covered in beads holding their drinks above the water line.

We have had the pleasure of hearing Jason Hodges throw down at a warehouse party out here near the H.H.A. headquarters in Denver, CO. Mr. Hodges kept the music bumping into the wee hours of the morning with a wonderful assortment of funky and jackin house. We also got to talk with him for a little bit and he is a very down to earth fellow that loves his house music. Jason Hodges, we here at House Heads Anonymous salute you. We'd also like to take a moment today to revisit an artist we featured in July, The Lovebirds. The Lovebirds is known for his abilities to be comfortable at a wide range of tempos. His midtempo/disco tracks are always quality, his deep house is pure, and everything else he puts out will always make a house head happy. To our surprise, we came across this track on his soundcloud in which he takes his knack for creating deep house vibes and throws it in a blender with liquid drum n bass.
